So I have a 2021 24in M1 imac that i would prefer to swap out for a MacBook for the portability. Apple doesn’t give the trade us value as it’s the newest model.

Anyone had an idea of what I should ask for when selling ?

It depends which model you have of course, but I always check completed listings on e-bay first to calibrate the price, then sell locally instead.

This is a good way to do it. Just take note. Look at sold prices. Not what people are asking. Then knock off 5% for a local cash sale. Which is still more than eBay will get you. As there is no shipping or seller fees.

There is a website called Swappa. It is a very good resource to sell used electronics. The other way would be eBay or possibly Amazon. Check all of these websites for the 24" M1 iMac and see what people are selling used for. Then determine the condition of your device and sell in the range you see listed. I have done this many times over for all electronics.

That being said selling your iMac now is a good idea. The longer you wait the chances are a 27" iMac with maybe m2 processor is released then your iMac will drop in value. Luckily right now would be a good time and Apple has great resale.

This is a good idea, but I think you need to look at ended auction prices, rather than "buy it now", because I understand that eBay only reports the original "buy it now" price, not any offers under this that resulted in the sale.

I recently sold a MBP16 and was looking at my local eBay for an idea of the market price. I was surprised by how much prices varied , and by how little logic there was when comparing the specifications sold. e.g. almost identical i9, 32GB, 1TB, 8GB 5500M went from AU$1975 to $3300 within a few days of each other, with a couple in between at $2600 & $2900. Yet machines costing less (e.g. $2200-2400) sat untouched in the "buy in now" category.

Same story with upgrades. 32GB machines sold for almost the same as 16GB machines even though this was a US$400 upgrade at purchase. However, 2TB SSDs sold for much better prices than 1TB models...and the upgrade cost a similar amount.

So it can be hard to determine what the actual value of what you are selling!
