I want to sell my powerbook, but I'm not sure about what to do with my hard drive. How can I protect myself from future identity theft?

Great question! Welcome to the forums.

There are a couple options.

You can insert your restore disc and reboot holding down the C button until you see the gray apple. Follow the instructions and look for the extra option to securely erase your drive. "Erase free space". 7-pass should do it, but it'll take all night.

There's also an app you can buy, but personally I don't think its worth it.

Edit: Just to let you know, the app is called SuperScrubber.

I recomend (second) this method, works well , and very secure, though it will take all night

thanks for the advice guys, I tried doing as you said but this notebook is running 10.2.8. The only option for this is to "zero out the data" in the disk utility. will this do?

I'd say that would pretty much do it... Maybe do it twice if you're really worried. Unless whoever is buying your computer has some pretty expert knowledge and resources to recover REALLY deleted files, you should be fine.
