  • Recieved an iPad 2 (32GB + 3G) from a raffle contest at a party
  • Remains unopened
  • No sales receipt
  • Not sure where it was purchased from.

First of all, I feel extremely blessed and fortunate. However, with the iPad 3 announcement just around the corner, I want to find a way to upgrade. What's the best way to return an unopened iPad 2 for a refund without a receipt? If I can't return it anywhere without a receipt, what's the best way to sell it for close to full retail value? ($729.00 from Apple Store) My end goal is to upgrade to iPad 3 next month at no loss. Help would be appreciated! :)

Apple for store credit?
That sounds like a good idea. Might try that.

Will they accept an unopened iPad for store credit with no sales receipt?

I won it in a raffle and it may or may not have been purchased directly from them.

Thanks everyone. Perhaps my best bet would be to swing by my local Apple retail store and cross my fingers.

Oh glorious day.

Please let us know what happens!

A very friendly Apple specialist accepted the exchange. No questions asked. Got Apple store credit in the form of a gift card, for the full retail price!!! I'm glad I didn't sell it on Amazon or Ebay for lesser value. Now for the big announcement...

:apple: iPad 3, here I come! ;)

Well how do you rate? I tried to do this same thing after the iPads first came out. I had a sealed one that I ordered online from Apple. They basically told me I was sol. Luckily I sold it on amazon and was only out their fees.

The difference can be from one Geek to another and YOUR attitude!

Those would be the stories showing that :apple: is different ... In a positive way. I would not even have thought about getting money back from the store w/o receipt.

Agreed, but I went in with a smile on my face. I know you catch more flies with honey. Working in retail I know I always tried harder to please the more personable customers. I really didn't think it would have been an issue anyway, it's not like they couldn't have resold it at retail anyway. My downfall may have been in that I wanted a full refund (not store credit). Also I was a female asking for a refund from another female. This does not always go well, unfortunately. hehe

Oh well, as I said I recouped most of my money. It's frustrating though to hear a company not treating all of it's customers equally. Oh well, it is what it is! I'm still a fan of their products!

Wow this is awesome. Do you think they would do this for an iPhone if it was a carrier upgrade?

Success Story

Wanted to share my success story. Purchased from Wal-Mart for Christmas gift Dec. 2011. Sat unopened because my friend got two (lucky girl) and waited too long to return. Sold to me for $300 with bluetooth keyboard. After reading this post I decided to I decided to try my luck. Returned the keyboard to Wal-Mart for $55 Gift Card and the iPad to Apple store for $545 Gift Card. Now with $600 credit on my $300 investment I sit patiently waiting for my half price iPad 3! :D Thanks for sharing your experience.

If bought in the Apple Store, then yes. Even without receipt they can look up the purchase from either your name, serial on the phone, IMEI/MEID, email address and I THINK the ICCID. Regardless, there is going to be SOME way for them to look it up if purchased in the store. You have 14 days to return the phone to the store I believe.

I've had a friend buy a black iphone 4s wanting a white and the white one came in within 14 days so she took it back they swapped the black out for the white. All within the store. The upgrade reversed, they returned the phone, then re-used the upgrade for the whte one. Simple as that. This was at our store at least, but it shouldn't be different in any other Apple Store I'd hope.

So what's stopping us from snatching them up at Best Buy at a $50 discount and returning them for full price?

I guess you could, but you're not getting cash from Apple, you're getting a giftcard. From my experience they will only refund the card that the item was purchased on, if they have a record of the purchase.
