So I have recently purchased a gaming PC and am selling my 2009 iMac 27" model. I have a Macbook Pro (late 2011) which I am hoping to put my user account onto from my iMac.

Now my macbook only has a 320gb HDD so directly transferring files onto that is out of the question as my iMac has 450gb of data and I only have 50gb free on my macbook.

What I am hoping to do is do an account migration onto my macbook and put the files onto my 2tb HDD on my PC. It is to my understanding that the files I have placed on my external HDD can only be transferred between macs so I am just looking for the simplest solution to my problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

How much space do you have available on your external HDD? Since you're selling it tomorrow, then why not clone your iMac onto the hard drive and then take your time transferring stuff over to your macbook.

Use carbon copy cloner. It has a 30 day trial. Copy everything into a dmg. Then copy it to the new computer.
