Selling iPhone want to make sure imessages are not sent

I know this has been asked before but i cannot find it while searching. I am selling my iphone and have heard stories about imessages being delivered to the new owner despite wiping the phone.

What exact steps do i need to take to make sure they will not get my imessages?

Settings > Messages > switch off iMessages

Restore it. When you set it up again, you sign in with your appleid that links it to your imeessage

what youre actually looking for is to go into itunes and log into your account. then go into manage devices and remove the phone off that list once you restore it. that will fully unassociate it from your account. when i logged into mine when i got my phone replaced, it still showed my two old phones under it.
