didnt know where to put this

i am selling my mbp with the 3 year applecare

what do i need to do to transfer the applecare into the new owners name, do i just contact apple customer support?

Thanks

AppleCare is attached to the serial, not the user. Officially the terms state that you need to fax AppleCare the new owner's information, few do and it doesn't seem to matter one bit.

Applecare Agreement NA Section 6 said:
Transfer of Plan
Subject to the restrictions set forth below, you may make a one-time permanent transfer of all of your rights under the Plan to another party, provided that: (a) the transfer must include the original Proof of Purchase, the Plan's Certificate and all of the Plan's packaging material, including printed materials and these Terms and Conditions; (b) you notify Apple of the transfer by sending, faxing or e-mailing notice of transfer to Apple Inc., ATTN: Agreement Administration, MS: 217AC, 2511 Laguna Blvd, Elk Grove, CA 95758, U.S., fax number 916-399-7337 or agmts_transfer@apple.com, respectively; and (c) the party receiving the Plan reads and agrees to accept the Terms and Conditions of the Plan. When notifying Apple of the transfer of the Plan, you must provide the Plan Agreement Number, the serial numbers of the Covered Equipment being transferred and the name, address, telephone number and email address of the new owner.

so my details arnt attached to the applecare?

all i have for the proof of purchase is the applecare box and the receipt with the macbook and apple care on it

I have AppleCare on a couple of machines, and it is bound both to my Apple ID and to the specific machine via its serial number. I will be selling one of those machines before its Applecare coverage expires, and I expect I will need to notify Apple of the transfer as detailed in a previous post.

You're all right. I've sent Apple an email in the past to transfer the warranty. I also purchased a used macbook with applecare and had the Apple Store change it over to me when I took it in for service. Same visit, on the spot.
