when i sell my mbp how to I protect my data from being retrieved reinstall lion or buy and install a fresh hd?
 
You securely erase the HDD using the ZERO OUT option in Disk Utility started from the Recovery Partition, then reinstall Mac OS X and shut down the Mac before you have to create an account (like you have to when first starting a Mac after having bought it).
