Besides erasing all data from the phone?

Do I have to turn off imessage ? Remove the phone from my Apple ID?

Any help is appreciated

As far as I know, they fixed the iMessage problems where erased phones still received the messages. It should now be linked only to your Apple ID + phone/email and not to the phone.
So remove the SIM card and erase the phone, and you should be fine. You can also remove it from Find My iPhone as it will never show up there again.

good call... on find my iphone I totally forgot about that one :)

The last official word I saw from Apple still said to turn off iMessage.
Better safe than sorry.

Turn off iMessage.
Pull SIM card.
Erase all files and settings.

In that order.
