Apple trade-in offers £300 for my unlocked 12 Mini 64GB, but mine is brand new, sealed in the box. Does anyone have experience of Apple paying a bit more if you go in store? Seems crazy to pay the same as an open, used one.

For context, I bought it for £279 as part of a contract but I'm tempted to trade in and put money towards the 13 Mini instead. Would consider eBay but then there's the fees/hassle. Would love to ideally get £479 for it...

Any advice?

No, it won't matter to them at all.

Trading in is selling to a wholesaler - Apple is just fronting for a third party company.

If you have something that might seem more valuable to others - such as like-new-in-box - then selling privately through whatever channel you prefer will net you the most.

Thanks - not the answer I wanted, but good to get a sense check on it :)

Also worth bearing in mind if there's something in the contract about selling it on before a certain point in the contract. I sent a samsung phone I didn't like to O2 recycle and it flagged on their system that it was an in contract phone. They sent it back to me but was a hassle.

Interesting! Do you know who holds that information? The phone was provided by Fonehouse but the contract is with Three - also, Apple confirmed phone is unlocked/unregistered.

Obviously I wouldn't want to sell it on eBay if the buyer is going to have issues.

I was sent this [http://www.three.co.uk/termspdf/Post_29_October_2020_01_07_21.pdf] in an e-mail but it says:

This agreement doesn't cover:
(a) any products or services you buy while using Three Services; or
(b) the supply of your Device.

But also says:

5.3 Each SIM or eSIM Profile can only be used in Devices which are authorised by us for
Connection to the Three Network. If you try to use the SIM in another device, it may
damage the device and affect your usage (including making emergency calls). In
these instances, we're not responsible for any such damage or usage problems.

Hmm... I called Fonehouse and they said there shouldn't be any issue unless I fail to keep up with my payments, which might result in the Network blacklisting the original phone. No likelihood of that, but worth knowing.

Wherever you decide to sell it, check their terms for selling contract phones. Swappa, for example, won’t let you sell a phone that’s still on contract. Because you can stop payments at any time and the new owner is left with a brick. It’s a risk for all parties involved (except you). And if you sell it in person on something like FB Marketplace, be honest about it.

Not sure of how you can check these things sorry.
