Send to a TV for working at home

How do you mirror to a TV? What I'm wanting to do is if get a MacBook use it at home, but rather than use the small screen use the TV. I also have an Apple TV which I believe you can use.

So how does this work? can't find a link on the Apple website, or YouTube to show me. Also can the MacBook screen be switched off and just use the TV?

Could you use a bluetooth keyboard and mouse and just say set the MacBook on the side and use the external BT keyboard and mouse to navigate, using the TV screen?
