How should I erase the drive? just use disc utility?

Yep. Boot off of a Mac OS X install CD, run Disk Utility, choose the drive, and erase it. Be sure to do a zeroing pass too, otherwise it's easy to get the data back.
 
just to help anyone that may stumble upon the thread in the future and needs similar help as I did:

I had trouble ejecting the install disc after the process. To remedy this I restarted while holding down the trackpad button. (This would be if you were not to reinstall the OS).
