Sending e-mail from within Word 2008

When I try to send e-mail from within Word 2008 (OS is Snow Leopard), the "Mail Recipient (as Attachment)" tab is grayed out.

I am using Thunderbird as my default e-mail program, though I have exactly the same problem when I set Mail as my default program, even after I have activated Entourage (which some people have said might help).

Is anyone else familiar with this problem? If so, could you please help?
