If the watch is on your wrist, it's certainly won't scratch . And then when you're through using it, it's likely going to be on your charger, which It won't scratch that way. If you set it down any services, just be cautious on what type of services you're setting it on. It shouldn't be an issue.

Along much of the back of my 2.5 year old series 0 Sport Watch I started to notice "micro abrasions". I'm not sure if it was from on/off the charger or perhaps rubbing against my arm hair or something else? Sometimes I had the impression that it would occasionally affect the HR reading (i.e. get way high readings that are clearly inaccurate). It has been replaced with a series 1 aluminum a few months back and the accuracy did seem to improve. I pay pretty close attention to it, so I really don't think it was just a coincidence.

Note: I still get anomalous/questionable readings with my series 1 on occasion but much less frequently and they can often be connected with (and caused by) some particular action, such as driving, playing piano, and anything that tenses the muscles in my wrist

I had a sport series 0 model for a few months, and I did notice micro abrasions on the composite back area. I believe it was caused by the puck charger. It looked rather dull, although I didn't notice any effect on the sensor readings or anything of that sort to my knowledge.

I sold the sport model and opted to go back to a used SS S0 after that, and I've been using it for almost a year now, and the back looks pristine. I also love the addition of the silver rings around the sensor.

i have slapped on one of those wet skin protectors from another watch and its working great no issues.

Who cares about the back, i mean it's not even visible when you wear it.

You're not understanding. It's not about if anybody cares if they see the back of the watch, if the composite back scratches, it can affect the sensors with the heart rate sensor.

I have an original Apple Watch since release day and still wear it everyday. The back is very scratched up. Not deep so I guess everyone is calling them micro abrasions but it’s very noticeable when looking at the back. It almost looks like a haze across the back. I haven’t noticed any problems with the sensors readings. I work Road Contruction so a lot of sand, dirt, mud, and dust have made there way under the Watch. Rubbing constantly between the back and my wrists. Even when tight stuff gets under there. During the day or night I have to take the Watch off, clean the lip around the sensors and wash it under water while spinning the crown and clicking the button to get stuff out, but it still works without any problems. I also have kept it on when in the pool. I am honestly surprised at the durability of the Watch. Just slow as hell compared to the new watches. So I wouldn’t worry about it too much unless you’re actually experiencing problems with the readings. I thought the back was suppose to be sapphire on all watches but I guess not.
