Sent Mail disappearing act

This happens to me every once in a while. I use Mac Mail. The emails in my sent mailbox, going back about 6 months or so, just disappear. The older emails are still there. Any email I send, there is no sent email of it in my sent email box. Then at some point, the older sent emails reappear. Or not. I think.

Anybody have any idea what might be going on?
