i remember that before i had a separate Google Map app (not a part of Chrome) for use in macOS, but can't locate a link to re-download it now.
is there a way to install this in macOS now?

I think the OP was asking about a macOS app.

Maybe the OP is thinking about Google Earth? I don't think it's a standalone app anymore…but you don't have to use Chrome…any browser will work, I think.

The OP did, in fact, ask for a macOS app. The Google Maps app is an iOS download, not a macOS download. There's nothing at your link that suggests a download on a Mac. You have to be on an iOS device. On your Mac, you would use Google Earth Pro, which does what Google Maps provides. You can use either the stand-alone Google Earth Pro, or the web version (which seems to work better than GEarth app, certainly much faster)

That's exactly what I linked to at MacUpdate. It's a MacOS download.
Clicking your link on my Mac takes me to a page to download Google Maps. Clicking the Download link at their page results in a page that says "This app is available only on the App Store for iPhone and iPad."

It appears to be only for iOS and iPadOS.

Well, I guess it's not available anymore. The link is to the MacUpdate site, which is only for MacOS software. I didn't actually try downloading it myself before posting the link. It appears that the package is gone.

There has never been a "Google Maps" app, per se, for the Mac, only Google Earth.

And like every Google application, it brings along the Keystone auto-updater framework, and the possibility of things like this.

Apple Maps for the Mac desktop started with 10.9.
