Separate home folders from apps?

I read a number of folks doing a basic configuration of:
1) OS, app and home folders
2) Media files
3) Photoshop scratch

I use my machine primarily for photography. I was thinking of storing all my media files in my home folder, putting the home folder on the a separate drive from the OS and apps.
1) OS and apps
2) home folders (with all user files)
3) PS scratch

This way I just backup the home folders. Any real difference between these 2 configurations?
