Separating the Today view from Notification Center would make it more in line with iOS 10.
In this concept, if you swipe with two fingers from the right edge of the trackpad, you'll be shown your notifications, no more Today view.
In iOS 10, to access your Widgets, you swipe from the left within the panel. For macOS Sierra, you swipe with two fingers from the left edge of the trackpad to reveal your new Widget pane.
Left pane = Widgets | Notifications = Right pane
The benefits of this?
No more having two tabs in one pane. No more having to swipe to access Notification Center and then having to scroll all the way up to the tabs to select the section you want to be in, it just breaks fluidity. It's more easier with this concept.
Also, since there's a Notifications tab on the top right of the menu bar, instead of having a Widgets tab on its own on the very left, the ability to access the Widget pane is to force-click on the Notifications tab.
Having this without an additional button for the menu bar will reduce clutter but add more functionality. And it also a great use for the force sensitivity trackpads.
