Serial Console access

I have one last hurdle to overcome before my boss will let me purchase a MacBookPro, serial console access. I'm a network engineer and I do a lot of switch/router configs through a serial port connection using putty.

How can I accomplish this from a Mac? Are there any other reasons to get a Mac that I can use as ammunition with my employer?
