There are dozens of Series 2 Apple Watches on Ebay with promises of immediate delivery. How is this possible if the watch won't be issued until this coming Friday?

They have preorders with day 1 delivery.. not a hard concept to figure out.

Well, I suppose I'm rather dense and can't figure it out. Are these watches genuine? Some of them are gold plated. How could they have gotten such preorders?

They'll ship on Friday after they've collected the watch from Apple, making a large profit in the process.

People do this for any new Apple product, buy presale and then resale, used to get buyers from from countries that do not get the initial orders.
They are just showing you they have a supposedly confirmed Apple order with earlier shipping date than you can get at Apple currently, just add more $$$ for the convenience and it's yours in a week or two.
Gold? Apple no longer offers real gold.

We've seen this many times with the iPhone, etc. You're basically bidding on a pre-order, and "immediate delivery" is on launch day.

Gold plating can be done within a single day too.
