I'll try to be as brief as possible. I purchased a Nike+ 42mm series 2 watch 7 months ago. Last week after I pulled the watch off the charger and put it on, I noticed the entire glass front had completely cracked all the way around and popped off. I only noticed this after I put my hand into a backback and while lifting my hand out, the glass came completely off hitting my hand. Prior to charging the watch the night before there was absolutely no damage, cracks, or scratches on the watch. It was working perfectly fine the previous day.
I took full HD video of the watch under a magnifying glass showing the crack all the way around and no other physical damage to the watch or glass such as any impacts, scratches, or cracks. I sent the watch in for what I thought would be a simple warranty repair and they declined it saying they found micro cracks in the glass near the corners that caused the glass to crack all the way around. I requested they send the watch back to me because I’ve learned my lesson with Apple. Always hold onto a broken product because what may not be covered now could be covered in the future after they acknowledge there is a widespread issue.
I received the watch back with a cracked edge, a missing corner, and clear scrapes on the glass that were all not in my video before sending it off. My plan was to take it to an Apple Store and have someone show me exactly what caused the glass to come off like it did but now I can’t because of the additional damage the repair techs caused on the watch before sending it back to me. I’ve reached out to them on this issue but have heard nothing back.
First, what can I do at this point? Second, is there some kind of an incentive for Apple to decline warranty repair work whenever possible to keep warranty repair percentages down? Something tells me there is and the additional damage caused to my watch might have been made to lead me to believe there was clear damage to the watch causing the glass to come off, however, I have video evidence there was not.
I’d like to file a complaint with Apple and provide them my before and after evidence but wasn’t sure how. I do know this, millions of people live with cracked phones and the glass rarely, if ever, breaks off all the way around over night from charging it. How would this be the case with a watch with no noticeable cracks at all? Also, there is no noticeable expansion of the battery at least now. The glass does go back into place without anything pushing up against it.
