Since the Apple Watch entered the market, I have been waiting until the technology improved to the point that a truly stand-alone device would be introduced. I skipped number one passed on number two and finally purchased series 3

However I do find it frustrating when applications don't work on those occasions when I want to leave my phone at home.

I aknowledge it is not the Star Trek end-all be-all teleportor device that will allow me to cut the tether to my iPhone completely.

However I do expect that there should be a qualitative amount of apps that will at least enable my attempt at winning periodic parole from my iphone.

Thus , I have been looking (and looking) for a comprehensive list of standalone apps that would work on cellular for the series 3.

I can't find one.

There's no way I'm the only person frustrated. There has to be a list. I've searched and I searched and I can't find it.

Will someone who knows of where I can find a list (or search method) for cellular enable series 3 watch apps, please post the link for me??

Many thanks

So apps need to specifically enable cellular? I’d expect that any apps that require a network stack would use tethered phone, WiFi, and then cellular in that order. Is that not the case? I have a series 3 but havent pokes and prodded much.

Are there specific problems you are looking to solve?

I totally agree with this. I left my phone at home and took my LTE Apple Watch to the gym. I would get my normal notifications from things like Facebook, Slack, etc. but when I clicked on them, I would tell me that I need the phone to do anything. I’m hoping that Apple pushes the developers to do native apps that can run on the watch with or without the phone.

Also another point, since the apple watch series 3 has a sensor for a barometer and altimeter there maybe are 2 or 3 apps which will allow you to leave your phone at home and get atmospheric pressure readings and also altimeter readings..hopefully before the end of 2018 we will see a abundance of independent apps.

Lots of threads on this - here’s what I’ve found so far:

Great post. Can it be wikified so it can be kept up-to-date?

I haven’t noticed this problem with Slack. I can still see and reply to notifications. Puzzling.

Sure - would love for there to be a wiki on this. As far as the Slack thing ... there are a bunch of messaging apps that will only work through the notification; where you can reply to a notification, but you can’t initiate a conversation or do anything without that notification present. So the system thankfully is robust enough to push notifications from an iPhone running miles away, and it allows for you to reply, but the app on the watch is still an old app that doesn’t support standalone use. A bit of an odd situation that devs should work on fixing :(

There was a thread that seemed to end early last month but here is the link to give you an idea of what's already ready for cellular and where some apps are heading.

WorkOutDoors is completely functional in standalone mode. Maps can be downloaded via LTE if no phone is present.

You can also cache maps on the watch for use when you don't have a data signal of any kind. This is particularly useful when you are hiking / running / biking in the middle of nowhere, regardless of whether or not you have a phone with you.

Yeah you can get all notifications but only certain apps allow access

Thanks everyone who responded to this tech SOS.

Since posting this, I wanted add, that I have found a standalone LTE weather app, which is fairly complete.

What I like about this app, is that it has "RADAR" accessible on LTE without the iphone. There are some other impressive features, but RADAR on LTE I have not been able to find on any other app.

The bad news, it cost approx $1 per month, for that level of upgrade. However, for me its worth it as Im something of weather nut who thinks a radar display on the wrist is pretty darn cool.

CARROT weather
