I just got a Series 4 but haven't opened/set it up and am running an iPhone 8 with iOS 11.

Do I have to update to iOS 12 to use the watch? Normally, it'd be a no-brainer to update but the latest version of iOS 12 but 12.1.2 has apparently been causing data/connectivity issues that I'm not excited about.

This is my first Apple Watch, any thoughts? Thanks in advance

Whenever I have an update I have had to do my phone first before the watch. I imagine you can use it out of the box with the installed WatchOS but you wouldn't be able to update it without doing the phone first.

I would assume series 4 comes with watchOS 5 pre-installed, which is a no go for iOS 11. My series 3 needs to be updated to use watchOS 5. Yours will need to do the same. As of the connectivity issue... ugh.

Thanks for the input guys. Updated the iOS and fired up the new watch and all seems to be well. First Apple Watch and I'm sold on it.
