So purchased another S5 with 6.2.1 to see if the bugs have been finally fixed and no

The S5 brightness at night time is awful compared to my S4.

Why apple ?

Took a picture of S5 and S4 both max brightness and always off with S5

Not only does this result make sense, but I could also see it as something baked into the S5 itself. Considering screen brightness on devices (phones, laptops, watches etc) is supposed to go to the absolute lowest in a black environment, it could just be coded to provide a lower brightness level when the ambient light sensor detects certain darkness to save battery over time.

So, personally, for me, this would be welcomed and I wouldn't actually ever even notice it... Unless...

A photo in blazing sunlight would be a better indicator of this... Of course, then a lower brightness would be an issue outside during the day. I'll have my S5 in a week and will be comparing this too just for fun.

That’s very strange. They both have LTPO panels and are rated at 1000 nits

That's why a sunlight test would be better - they might do 1000 in direct sun to increase visibility - but tone it down in dark environments... That's why it can be the exact same screen but different something else inside...

I noticed this at first but I’m used to it now. Everything’s gotta have ambient adjusting brightness now built in... eye strain or whatever 🙄

When introduced they also told s5 has an improved light sensor, if I remember correctly. I often feel my S4 use a measurement from last activation and not adjust so it stays overly bright in sudden darkness.

Makes sense as to not wake you up in the middle of the night with the glaring light.
Apple should implement a setting like how iOS has night mode; setting up brightness at certain times of day/night.
Overall my series 4 at lowest brightness works for me no matter what time of day. I’m using infograph modular watchface
