I received my Apple Watch Series 7 last week, and kept the always on display option on because it is a feature that is promoted, along with 18-hour battery life.

The biggest reason I chose to get a Series 7 was because my Series 4 could not make it through most days on a single charge. That's not a complaint, it just is what it is with an aging battery.

I was not impressed with the Series 7's battery life. I was getting through the day, and night for sleep tracking, if I did things just right,

I decided to turn off the always-on display. I honestly don't see the point in it, to begin with. It might provide you the time ever so slightly faster, but the dimmed display, hidden information on complications (for privacy, which is good), and the drain on the battery just don't make sense. When I turned it off, my Series 7 has only used 50% of the battery in 15 hours. That is including having it on overnight. It came off the charger at 12:07pm Eastern time yesterday, and has 51% left at 3:08pm Eastern time today.

I see no benefit to the screen being on all the time when you can get an extraordinary benefit from only charging your watch every other day!!

Ymmv ? Leave my AOD on 24/7 except at night when I wear it to bed and put it in theatre mode and generally every morning I charge it at breakfast to almost 100% so zero issue for me….fast charge was equally as big a thing as AOD for me on the 7.

The strange thing is that there are plenty of posts from people saying that AOD has no effect on battery life.

It obviously does - but that's quite a remarkable impact.

Right, it is crazy to think that people report there not being an impact on battery life. I just don't see any added benefit for the display to always be on. No one needs to see my screen!

I like my screen…. I prefer being able to see it at all times to just a black empty space….its Just a preference which is why I got a 7. Why didn’t you get a 6 ?

Because it isn't the newest tech and I didn't have an opinion to the AOD until I had it. It is great that it is a feature for those who want it, and great that it can be turned off for those that don't!

I keep meaning to experiment with AOD off on the S7 GPS to see how far the battery can stretch. I had the S4 GPS before and AOD is not a feature I particularly care about one way or the other. At first it was distracting, but I left it on, because battery life had been fine and AOD stopped bothering me after a few days.

My battery percent usage is about the same on the S7 with AOD on as it was on the S4, so I can get just shy of 2 full days use if I forget to charge, but normally put it on the charger 2x/day. A few minutes in the morning while getting ready & a little longer in the evening when winding down.

I agree. I had the 3 and upgraded to the 6. I initially had AOD on, but I was getting only one day of use when with the 3 I was getting 2 days. I turned it off and the 6 was getting me 2 days again.

I have a Series 7 and it seems to last all day on a charge with the display on.

My issue is how do I get it to show the time when it is on the charger without tapping the desk etc.? I would like to have it STAY on at night as a nightstand clock. I have AOD and Nightstand mode on but the display goes blank after a couple seconds on the charger stand. I can tap the desk of course to turn it on but if I am on the other side of the bed I have to roll over twice to get there.

I’m just about to charge mine after 24 hours with AOD on and the Infograph Watchface with all complications selected. I only charged it to 94% yesterday and it’s at 40% now. It will take about 30 mins to charge it back up to around 90%. For me the AOD works really well. Some days I will include about 2 hours gps activity (golf, walking, running, cycling) and I still have plenty of battery left after 24 hours.

I've never understood the need for AOD if I am completely honest ?

When you are not actively looking at the screen, why would anybody want the screen to be ON - its completely redundant?? Its like the headlights on your car - why would you have them turned ON when you're not actively driving the car??!

?

I think alot of people requested this feature maybe because, like me, they disliked the raise-to-wake function and found it frustrating because it oftentimes required an exaggerated wrist movement to wake the screen. While I feel like rtw has improved, the AOD just makes the watch experience that much better for me.

I get pretty bad battery life where my series 7 will last 12-14 hours on a charge. I keep the AOD on as that's the main reason to have the newer model than even the older models. not like there's much difference a side from that.
