They're certainly not scratch proof. I have the SE in black and so far no scratches.
The scratch resistance won't deteriorate over time in any material way, so a given impact on the watch, whether day 1 or 1,000, will still have the same effect.
I basically had set up the watch and had it on for a couple of hours Saturday, placed it on the charger, and discovered it scratched. My 3, 4, and 6 had some scratches in the main glass, but the aluminum never scratched up.

Well, obviously the scratches (including what appears to be deep scratches on the glass) didn't appear magically, so something had to have happened while you were wearing it on Saturday or someone else has gotten to your AW when you weren't wearing it.

I agree something caused the scratches. I honestly cannot think of how the scratches would have ended up on the watch as I was still using my series 6 on Saturday.
Again, I find it odd that as much as I have worn my 3, 4, and 6 series, I have not once scratched the gray coating off of the watch. The screen, it's going to scratch over time, but the body has never penetrated the coding on the aluminum. I am curious if others will over time encounter the same.
Only time I did something like that was when I upgraded to the 5 and figured now I could wear it in the shower, and accidentally whacked it against the stone shower tiles. Luckily I always get Applecare+.
