So I recently bought a Series 7 to replace my Series 4. If I turn off the always on display I’ve noticed the screen behaves strangely in specific situations.

If the room is really bright or really dark it’s fine, but if I raise my wrist to turn on the screen in a medium lit room the screen seems to go from off, to 50%, to 100% on in stages. It’s an odd behavior and it bothers me, and I’m curious to hear if anyone else with a Series 6 or 7 notices the same. Do I have a defective watch?

Mine does the same. Did you end up figuring anything out or have apple look at it?

I had a AW7 GPS for a little bit and I dont remember it doing this but I didn't use it for long. The one I have now is a AW7 GPS+Cell and it does it but not all of the time.

My new SE does it too. I suspect it brings the display to a default level based on ambient light, pauses for about a half second and checks the ambient light again and readjusts.

At the extremes, the initial level is good, but there is a range in the middle where changing your wrist orientation has enough impact on the ambient light to require adjustments.

Thanks for replying to confirm. I had a SE for a year and I dont remember it doing that in low lit rooms but maybe I didn't pay attention. I think I found another thread in here withs someone with a S5 posting the same thing so I guess its normal :)

My series 7 seems to do same. I wouldn't worry about it. Not defective at all. I'd look at the display settings to see if there's any option to disable that. Worth a try :)

I will notice the stepped-turn-on as you described IF I have an all/mostly white Watch face.

If the face is something like less than half white, it will turn on all the way.

So… just wondering what Watch face you’re using? (*oh, I’m on series 6)

I currently use the round California face with a dark dial and olive colored numerals.

I notice the stepped behavior mostly when my wrist is moved into an area with more light than the ambient light in the room, say in a dark room when I bring my arm up from my side and view it near my laptop screen, or into the path of light coming in from a window.

I don't think there is any way to stop it or adjust it that I've come across. Maybe a future OS update will be cut the delay in half or lengthen the ramp time slightly to make the adjustment hardly noticeable.

I don’t usually have the display off but I’d be interested in learning what is causing what OP describes also. Mostly because a different but possibly related annoyance happens to me often, that is, the weather temp and UV index displayed is frequently off by a few, sometimes several numbers. It sounds minor but it’s regularly a bother since I have to look at my phone weather app to check the real temperature and UV. Another thing that sometimes ”helps” or causes it to update is, swiping back and forth between watch faces will often help push it along to updating itself.
To a less extent, this happens with the date sometimes too. Weird.

I use the infograph modular watch face with hourly weather in the middle

Okay, so I tested just the first default Infograph modular.

In full light it comes right on 100%

In darkness (covered Watch with hand except for little hole for me to see face) it came on halfway and then half second later went to a higher brightness.

It’s doing the opposite of what I expected it to do :S

*In other news, I haven’t used this watchface in a while! Might have to put it back in rotation after changing some complications out.
