I've got the app store open, safari and word open. The colour wheel keeps sinning and the pages kee being really slow to respond. Even when I'm typing occasionally the screen freezes.

I check activity monitor and can see the page outs are high, but I've got barely anything open!

You also have Excel open, but it does not seem to be using much memory.

Why don't you sort by Real Memory instead of CPU? You can judge your memory usage better.

Well.. a browser shouldn't be using 1.4GB... especially if it's idle! On a 4GB system that's a significant chunk.

The OP did not provide the numbers of open tabs, thus it could be a valid REAL MEM number.
Or it is just OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion running amok with the RAM again.

Here is the screen shot of real memory:

I have 6 tabs open, all just normal webpages though, couldn't imagine why they'd make it so slow!

Quit Safari and.
Try another browser like Chrome with the same pages.

Maybe it is a Safari issue. 900MB web content seems a lot. You should only get that with very heavy websites.
