The service battery indicator is on on my 2015 MacBook Pro so I will make an appointment to bring it in. Can they repair this while I wait or will they need it for some time. I have Time Machine backups so I am not worried about losing data but I wonder how long I won't have use of the system. Just asking people that have already gone through this procedure for the Retina models.

Just scheduled an appointment and the earliest is this Sunday - that's quite a while. I've usually been able to schedule the same day pre-COVID. I guess I will migrate things over to the 2014 MacBook Pro to use as my main system. Both machines are set up similarly as the 2014 is the backup system to be used in cases like this.

Found the answer on Google (apple.stackexchange.com).

It takes 10 to 35 minutes to do the repair. But it can take 3-5 days to actually do it depending on the capabilities and workload of the store. So best case, I just wait for it. Worst, is probably overnight. They appear to work overnight at my store as I've had repairs done by the next day at this store.

Yes, as you found, it's a bit store dependent. But assuming they have the parts on-location, it's usually a 24-hr job (though they don't promise that).

I did it ~6months ago where they re-did the battery / top-case because of butterfly keyboard issues. I got the appt for Fri afternoon drop-off, they said latest it would be ready is by Sunday evening. And it was ready to go Sat at noon for pickup.
