Set As Alarm Tone

Hi, i have an mp3 that i want to set as my alarm tone. My phone is not jail broken... so is there a way to get around this... i have tried iTunes but it did not work... can anyone please help me here, thanks in advance

shorten it to <40 seconds
transcode to aac
rename file from *.m4a to *.m4r
add to itunes
sync phone
select it as your alarm tone
