Set movie (AVI MP4) thumbnail to picture

I have just upgraded from W7 to iMac Yay.
Just trying to organise my files again and get used to the new system, one thing I can't work out how to do tho is set a picture as a movie thumbnail.
On my W7 I used to have all the movies DVD cover's there so I could flic thru them, and once I choose a movie clicking on the picture would open the movie - I dont know if this was a picture that acted like a short cut or what, however with the Mac cover-flow view it would be really handy to have this back again instead of the thumbnail being of the first few seconds of the movie or the VLC cone...
