For those of you that prefer to set up as new for a completely fresh install on your new iPhone and not restore from any backup (iTunes or iCloud)

How do you go about transferring your iMessages and photos from one phone to the other? iCloud took care of my bookmarks/notes/contacts/calendars and I've reinstalled all my apps manually. But how can I get my iMessages and photos without going the restore from backup route?

Anyone?

I usually don't. My MacBook, old iPhone, and iPhone backups contain my old messages if I ever need a specific one. Also I just use google photos now for my photos, however it can be an inconvenience when you're used to specific pictures being in your camera roll, and they aren't there anymore. And my Live Photos are unfortunately probably not gonna backed up by google photos :/

iCloud Photo Library takes care of all my photos. I'm not bothered about losing my messages.
