Hi. Tapping into the vast expertise here to limit the chance I do something I will regret...

My current setup: I have a Mac Mini 2018 running Catalina with my user folder on a Thunderbolt-attached SSD (in an enclosure). I have a time machine backup to a Synology NAS. I have a Carbon Copy Cloner clone of the startup to another SSD in my Thunderbolt enclosure. Finally, I have another Carbon Copy Cloner clone on a USB-C Gen 2-attached NVMe drive.

As an experiment, I installed Big Sur on the NVMe external drive and have been running for a couple of days from that external device. Things seem to be working pretty well. I like the speed and look and feel of Big Sur, so I would like to go ahead and take the plunge on my internal SSD (my main startup).

I was thinking that I would just make a bootable clone back from my NVMe drive to the internal SSD. I still have the third drive (the Catalina SSD clone) to fall back on I suppose. But is this a reasonable way of transitioning Big Sur to my main SSD? Or is it better for some reason to go through the normal install process (e.g., book the internal SSD to Catalina and run the installer from there). I would prefer the cloning route as it will be quicker (e.g., I can do the clone while I still work on my computer, and then just restart when it's done).

Thoughts? Thanks!

Bumping this back up to the top, in case anyone has experience / advice to share. Thanks!
