I want to set a password so that once my MacBook has booted up a password will be required to continue (I'm not talking about the system password required to load new software.).

How do I do this? I have a late 2007 MacBook running OS 10.5.8.

You'll find the option to do this in "accounts" within system preferences.

Password after bootup

Yes but how do you activate it so that a password box shows up is after you bootup?

Click on login options and you'll see a radio button to the right that allows you to select "display login window as"..."name and password".
