Setting Powerbook to Sleep w/ External Drive

I've got a Tibook with a USB 2.0 PCMICA card installed. I have an external hard drive hooked up to the card and whenever I try to put my powerbook to sleep the computer just ends up shutting off instead of sleeping. Does anyone have any ideas what might be the problem here?

Try connecting the hard drive directly to the PB, and removing the card.
