Setting the default in Text Edit

Is there a way to change the default in Text Edit to some

thing other than RTF?

From Preferences > New Document you can set it to plain text.

If you insert graphics the default will change from RTF to RTFD
Saving in TextEdit is a different matter as you have many choices
Word 97 .doc
Word 2003 .XML
Word 2007 .docx
OpenDocument Text .odt
TXT / RTF / RTFD / HTML & Web Archive.

Right. What I was hoping to do is change the default to Word 97.doc. When I'm saving documents I often forget to change it to that from RTF.
