Setting up a WDS network

I am trying to setup a WDS network with an airport extreme as the base and an airport express as an end. I setup the extreme by entering the apple id for my express. I then set up my express as an end and enter the apple ID of my extreme. I have tried having the wireless network the same and different, either way I try it my extreme always blinks orange and says that that there is no other wireless points on my network. My express just blinks yellow and I cannot get to it, unless I reset it. If any one has some suggestions please let me know, also let me know if the wireless network should be named the same on points of my network. Thanks for any help given.
