Is there a way to setup my existing email acts on my imac where it won't try to download 257,000 messages stored on the server?

In Gmail settings, I have:

IMAP enabled
auto-expunge OFF
Archive message ON

I connected my Time Machine drive to the new imac and did the migration, but it didn't set up my email.

Is there a way I can setup my mail so it won't try to DL a jillion messages?

Thanks!

You can configure gmail to not make some "labels" visible via IMAP. That could limit the amount of email that gets sync'd maybe.

Yes this helps a lot. Go to the GMail web page and in the IMAP settings tell it not to display the "All Mail" folder in IMAP. That will cut the initial DL in half since All Mail is a duplicate of all messages in other folders.
