Setting up mail without importing old emails

Sorry if this is a dumb question. But I want to set up Apple Mail with my gmail accounts but I don't want it to import all my previous emails. It takes way too long and I find it unnecessary.

Also, after I set up the accounts, I know I can sync it so that when an email is read in Mail, it'll be shown as read in my email accounts too. But does that mean if I delete it from Mail, it'll also delete it from my email?
