Hi there

I'm currently trying to set up mail accounts in Mail [mail.app] on my MacBook. I have about 6-7 different e-mail addresses which are all accessed through 2 different IPSs, depending on where I am located at a particular time when sending my mail.

However I am having problems and now I believe they are caused by the way apple stores and names the account preferences in the file system. The impression I get from my initial research is that nothing can be done to resolve my problem and I would be better off reverting back to Outlook Express and my XP based PC. However I don't wish to give up that easily, having decided to purchase a Mac last autum, so I will explain what I am trying to do and hope a solution exists.

In Outlook Express on my PC. I would just set 2 or more versions of the account and when sending the e-mails, select which version I wish to use. I say 2 or more because sometimes I would have versions with different reply addresses. This is useful for mailing lists I run.
In the account settings it would be as follows:
1. My Name
2. account name
3. my e-mail address
4. my reply address, when it's different
5. incoming mail pop3 server details
6. outgoing mail smtp server details.
7. incoming mail user name and password
8. outgoing mail server user name and password for authentication.

So for my Wanadoo [now Orange] and talktalk accounts, I would have 2 different versions of the e-mail account set up so that when composing my e-mails I could select the one based on where I was located. If I had different reply addresses then it would be 4.

However in Mail after creating one version of the account with my talktalk smtp, when I enter my e-mail address, in order to later on add in the details for the Wanadoo smtp, I get the following error message:

"The account <insert name here> already has this host name and user name"

It won't let me go any further.

If I type in a fake account name and then later on manually change it, I get the following error message:

"The account path <inset account path here> is already being used by the account <insert account name here>"

That happens even if the smpt is different. It is because Mail is using the POP account name to name it and not the smpt. It really needs to use neither but the account description name. This is why I have a feeling I may have to go back to Outlook Express and windows. However it may be that Mail has another way of handling multiple smtps. After all there appears to be a work around for reply addresses, something else I'd have expected Apple to have done better at. In fact I didn't even consider the fact such an option wouldn't exist. It seemed so basic.

Regards

Hi there

I have found the answer on the following web page from 2003:

Use multiple SMTP servers with one email address in Mail.app Apps
http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20030515232638824

It requires manually editing the preference files XML but hopefully that will work in Snow Leopard still.
