Been a few years since I updated my phone. Will I need to update to IOS 13 on my X tomorrow so that when I get the new phone I will have a compatible back up?

Totally a guess, but I don't think you have to update. It just might go a little faster when you get your new phone if you already have. I debated that too, until I realized I do not have the patience to wait.....
