setting up printer first time

No, it shouldn't as this isn't Windows.
Go to System Preferences > Print & Fax and see, if the printer is recognised.

i did that, it doesn't show in the drop down menu. can I just pop the install disc into superdrive?
that also reminds me, I tried to install xmarks, and once i double clicked on the download, it asked me for a password.

Your have a specific model printer from a specific manufacturer. Which specific model from which specific manufacturer?
