I dont really know anything about this, but I was wondering if it is possible to use my desktop iMac as my own FTP server. I actually wanted to host my forums (using ikonboard 3.0) off my own server instead of using ikonboard's remote forum solution, myib.

thanks in advance.

How about some more info:

iMac specs
OS you're currently running

It's definitely doable, but hardware and software considerations might make it undesirable.

iMac Specs :

450 Mhz
320MB RAM
20 GB HDD
Ati Rage 128 (8MB)
Roadrunner Cable Internet connection.

At the moment this iMac is running Mac OS 9.1
I have not installed Mac OS X for the simple reason that it is my brother's computer. (It's the only one in the house with an Internet connection. I am running Mac OS 10.1.4 on mine.)

About FTP/HTTP :

When I downloaded ikonboard 3.0 it stated that I needed an FTP server. Like I said, I am a complete newbie when it comes to server admin. so I don't know that much about it.

All up in your bidness
You can run some types of servers on OS 9, but don't expect any kind of reliability or versatility. I would strongly recommend upgrading to OS X or Linux if you want to run a server that other people on the Internet will actually be accessing. Your brother's iMac is fast enough to use as a medium-traffic web server, but is it connected to a UPS and do you make backups at least bi-weekly? What kind of firewall rulesets would you want to apply? Do you know how to edit Apache's config file to adjust which DSOs it loads? How can you adjust how often your logs are rotated? Will you know how to screen the logs for various errors? How will you prevent spammers from hijacking the server and using it as an open relay? Likewise, how will you prevent script kiddies from hacking it and using it as an FTP server for warez and DivX porn, and when it happens, will you be able to take responsibility? Etc.

I would recommend going to the bookstore and getting one of those big, thick books on Unix system administration, to prepare you to answer these questions before you set up and administer your own Internet-connected server... unless you don't care about availability or security or the likely negative consequences and just want to tinker around for fun.

Thanks for the comments. I guess I cannot use iTools' File Transfer option and 20MB webspace to host my ikonboard and/or my weg log.:D

Can people do it while your mac has Web Sharing enabled or all the other protocals enabled?

I installed a software firewall on to my computer and people tried to come into my computer using different methods and I don't have a static IP so how did they know my computers address?
