Setting up VPN?

I have set up a VPN on my Synology 413j NAS but when I mount a drive I can not open any of the files. I can view a shared folder which points to a USB connected drive but not open any files.

Am I right in saying over VPN I should be able to mount drives and open files as if I were on the local network (where mounting the drive and accessing the files works)?

Fixed it. I just noticed I left the 5000 on the end of the URL as I copied and pasted. All working now.

Incidentally what I am trying to do is VPN into the NAS mount the USB hard drive in OSX and then open my videos with VLC. However this is insanely slow so far. Is there a way to speed this up or access another way that is faster ?
