Settting up a calendar-based database..

I want to start a database featuring events at different locations that last for different periods of days/weeks.

I thought all I had to do was make a few fields for what the event is etc and when it starts/ends and then I would be able to enter a particular date and it would tell me what events or on at that time.

But my friend tells me it's not as simple as that and that I need to set things up with a lot more work needed.

Is there someplace or thing that can help me? - I have looked on versiontracker to no avail...

Any advice appreciated...
