I have a Yamaha rx-679 with a 5.1 setup. I am using a 4k ATV. Can anyone give me advice on how to best configure the yamaha for the best sound? I am also using ARC from a Sony 950XG. I do not seem to get much sound out of the rear speakers.

Thanks,
Joe

once you get everything in place, make sure you do the automated tuning (YPAO) as it will help you much more than we can, since it can actually hear and adjust the room accordingly.

depending on what you're watching, you may not get much out of the rear as they are merely an enhancement, are typically quite a bit softer than the fronts, and depend greatly on whoever mixed the audio for that particular movie/show.

if you have Netflix search "Test patterns"
play season 1 episode 1
it will beep a couple times. (beep should be in time with the green arrow flash, so that can help you verify audio timing)
then say "left channel" and do a frequency sweep, then some pink noise.
it will work it's way though right, center, and sub (you'll probably just hear a rumble) before it moves to the surround channels.
make sure your volume is at a reasonable level before you start. (You really just don't want it full volume, as there is a slight chance it could cause damage) as long as regular TV volume is comfortable you should be fine.
If you just hear a guy counting, you're only playing the stereo track, and need to check the audio settings in the main settings app.

if you have an iPhone, you can also adjust audio timing between your speakers and the aTV.
go to the bottom of the video and audio section of the appleTV settings app.
it'll walk you through everything, but you need to take your phone close to the TV to start.

Before calibrating your speakers, using tips waw74 mentioned, I would make sure they are optimally placed.

Dolby has a good guide on how to do exactly this.

Rear speakers should be slightly above the ear level.

Thank you for your answers. My speakers are positioned properly and all emit sounds when tested. My question is what is the best setting for the yamaha? Whats is the difference between the surround code and the movie selector on the remote? Should I pick straight?. I have adjusted the rear speakers volume to almost maximum and still never year anything come out of them. Thanks.

Is you Apple TV connected to the Sony or to the Yamaha?

Yamaha is noted for their sound programs. "Straight" on my older unit means no sound program applied. I have various "movie" modes (sci-fi, adventure), concert modes (concert hall, cellar), etc. There is no rule as to which one to use. You have to try them out and find out which ones you like.

The surround channels only have sound when the source material supports it. Generally they are low volume.

HDMI from ATV to Sony and HDMI from Sony to Yamaha using ARC. I use ARC because I cannot get the Yamaha to support Dolby Vision. I have all those modes also. I was just wondering which one to use when watching a 5.1 movie from netflix or amazon.
thanks

Adventure, Drama, Mono Movie, Standard, Spectacle, Sci-Fi - there is no single best mode. You have to try and decide what you like. I generally use "straight" as I assume that means I am getting the sound that the director intended.

I used to have a Yamaha receiver with all those audio modes mentioned. Never could really understand which one to use, and their manual is pretty useless in terms of describing how to go about using the modes along with other audio settings. Think I just finally picked one and left it there for the duration.
