I'm in the market for a NAS (qnap or synology) but have no prior experience with it.

Whenever I've migrated from one Mac to another I've always used my TM backup on an external usb harddrive.

The new mac can easily recognize the usb drive during the setup process, but what about a NAS?

Can a new mac, or even a mac that I have to reformat and reinstall completely, locate and use the TM backup on a NAS during setup?

Most new NAS systems provide TM module that allows the Mac to recognize it and backup over the wire. I'm currently using a ReadyNAS unit by Netgear that has exactly this. Currently have 3 different Macbooks backing up without issue. I know QNAP provides same. Not sure on Synology.
