Setup new phone 1st as iPod non-cell to evaluate

My iPhone 6 is to arrive this Thursday. If possible, I would like to initially set it up without activating my Verizon cell service to the phone.

If the phone's screen quality, wifi functioning, etc all check out as satisfactory I would then connect it to my Verizon phone number thus deactivating my current iPhone 5.

Is the above possible?

Sure just take your SIM card out after you get past the activation screen.

What I did with my 6 Plus was to activate the new SIM on it with my number and then I just swapped SIMs with my 5s.
