Severe Quicktime X Problem

I opened a .mp4 file in QTX when the playback started to act like the file was corrupt - hard to explain but keep flashing green and purple.

I quit QTX and opened another file - same happened again.

Third time lucky I thought - Opened the file and my screen turned off - while playing the audio. Couldn't get the screen back on doing anything

Had to re-boot.....shame, this is the first major problem i've had with snow leopard :/

anyone else encountered this?
