A geographical oddity
I was reading the breastfeeding thread in Current Events (good read), and was thinking about the commercials for Descent (which Lori won't watch), and got to thinking....

Descent (from the makers of Saw and Hostel) claims to be bloodier and goreier than any movie ever released. The commercial is pretty disturbing. If this had been a commercial about breastfeeding and had shown a mother breastfeeding, can you imagine what kind of negative response it would have gotten?

I admit that historically I preferred the rather unrealistic death scene over the sex scene. But, as I age, I wonder more and more if we are getting too loose with how realistic and graphic we portray violence to be and if in our quest to avoid true obscenity and appealing to kids' to "prurient interest" we have gone much to far. Am I wrong?

When cops are arresting women for breastfeeding babies in their own car, it proves the sorry state of American morality. I am not looking forward to the conversation with my son when I have to explain why people kill each other.

The commercials don't really show anything.. they IMPLY death and destruction, but don't SHOW anything. Would a commercial that IMPLIES breastfeeding get people's panties in a bunch? Maybe.. there's always a vocal group whose life-long-ambitions are to get their panties in a bunch over something. I'm sure there's a church group in Kansas banning "Descent".

Don't worry about it. People in the early 50's (40's or 50's not sure) thought the moral apocalypse was coming when the word 'Damn' was said in a movie.

I agree, mostly. Our culture is very backwards in many ways. What's the harm in seeing breasts? Other cultures that are much more lax about nudity seem to be doing fine. I think there should be a law forcing everyone to wear loincloths and only loincloths in regions that permit such attire.

Let's put it this way... most of us are far more likely to see breasts and have sex than we are to brutally murder strangers or see multiple dead bodies.
Speak for yourself! ;)

But seriously, I agree. People are against fascism and for freedom of speech, until something offends their morals.

Down in Australia, the censorship sways more toward keeping violence out than keeping sex out. I like it that way. Screwing is heaps better than getting shot.

Good stuff.

Ever thought of being a politician? Sums it all up rather nicely. :)

I can't belive you would say that violence is WORSE than sex. Death is NATURAL. Sex, on the other hand, is totally morally wrong and un-natural. Duh.

If I ever had to choose between only ever watching sex and only ever watching violence I would pick sex...why watch dead people when I can watch porn (or sex in movies, but that is nowhere near as interesting)?

Exactly. You should have seen the smile on my mum's face when the stork delivered me to her. She avoided sex completely.

Yes. That was sarcasm. :p

One of the few reasons I don't like the internet...people can't tell when I'm being sarcastic. Which is often. I need to learn to use these smilies better.

My mum paid for Express Post and it only took 7 months for me to be "delivered."

I'd be more sarcastic, but I've learnt that you need to be a bit more obvious around here because people don't read posts, or read entire threads and miss the replies following sarcastic posts.

I even put quotations around the word "delivered" just now so that people might.....miiiiight.....notice that delivery doesn't just refer to someone coming to give my mum a package, but also to actually giving birth, which is also called a "delivery."

I have always been a little confused by what makes it more justified to show the human body being blown to bits than to show the human body in its purest form.

I think, in the U.S. it's our puritan roots. It doesn't seem to be that way anywhere else in Europe.

The guy in Eurotrip sums it up nicely "America was founded by prudes!"
