Looks like Apple and the publisher are offering this as a promotional free game. I'm all about these types of deals. It's why I'm a Steam member, because they often offer good-to-great games cheap-to-free.

This is a good move by Apple, and I hope they do more of it.

For those who don't know, Shadowgun: Deadzone is a free-to-play online shooter set in a sic-fi future (ala the Unreal Tournament game series). I'm downloading it now. I hope the controls translate well to mouse and keyboard.

Here's some footage of the game in action on tablet.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHpzDTiSM0c

I'll let you know if it's formatted properly for 16:10 and 16:9 screens.

Thanks mate!

Downloading it now. I'm not one to say no to free games usually. :)

Edit: It's actually fun and features real cross-platform gaming. The number one player was running Facebook, I was 1 of 3 Mac gamers, and the rest were all on Android.

Rather fun, despite being a little clunky when handling.

So, after a while playing with this, I've got to say, it's definitely worth the download if you're a shooter fan. The fact that they track player stats serverside is pretty fun, if you're competitive. I just wish they gave you the option to run instead of walking paaiinnffuullyy slowly. I can spin my player's field of view around as quickly as any shooter, but he feels held down by lead weights.

I'm guessing that it's because this got its start as a tablet/phone/Facebook game, and they want a fair experience for all platforms.

I like how you can change the resolution and max out the graphics if your Mac can support it. Nice touch, as are the power-ups and weapons upgrades. I've played 4 matches and already have unlocked an assault rifle.

Good, mindless fun for when you want to jump online and frag your friends.

You can run, actually. Tried the shift key yet? :) I've played about 10 or so matches, and I already have an assault rifle, a shotgun, a sniper, a plasma rifle, an LMG, and I have also upgraded my SMG and assault rifle a bit. I'm always #1 on the scoreboard in DM, and I barely qualify as "decent" in COD.

This sounds pretty good from the feedback you guys are giving. I saw it on the app store but when I saw in app purchases of currency, I figured it must be pay to win pretty much and dismissed it. Maybe I will give it a spin.

I don't even mind paying something if the game is fun. I just tend to shy away when I see a bunch of tiers for currency that make me wonder how much this game I never heard of before really costs to play. Maybe I should be more open minded and try them I guess. It is free to check some of them out at least.

If you can run with the shift key, can you just turn running always on in options? I'd just as soon run always myself.

You can't shoot when sprinting, I think it was a design decision so that tablets/phones don't get decimated by PC gamers.

I tried to make a short little video about my first impression.

Handles well, and from what I can tell after playing it some more is that you can probably unlock the stuff you can buy.
You buy gold, to gamble or buy boosts, but you can just earn gold killing people.

Whatever you do, do no cmd+q the game, if you do that and it was in fullscreen it will never run again. Or it didn't for me I kept having this appear with an Apple crash report.
Had to reinstall, besides that it's a fun game and was a 250MB download I think.

I enjoyed your video. It was good to see the game in action. I'll give it a shot myself sometime soon. Looks like a good time and the price is certainly right. There's no way I'd buy gold though. Earning it via play will have to be good enough.

Thank you for the heads up about CMD+Q! I almost always quit apps that way! I hope I can condition myself not to for this one or else, huh? I hope they get that fixed. That's badness. Otherwise looks like good free fun. It's very cool how it is on so many platforms and you can see who is playing on which one.

Glad you liked it.

I also use CMD+Q all the time, especially since the game even in full screen is actually just an extended window.

I did submit a lengthy bug report to them including my crash log. Hopefully they'll get a fix out. Although I saw on steam that some other games only have that issue. All of them running the Unity Engine.

It could just be an engine issue, but hopefully they can fix that.

If you're up for a game together you can try and add me macgamerAl.
All the names seem taken.

Of note, you also get gold at a decent rate and you can play that slot machine for me. Although once you run out it gives you a pop-up box to 'Buy' 700 gold with real money.

I find it's a great little game ( 250MB ) to just pick up and play if you want some time to kill.

It's not pay to win. If you open up the game once a day, you get double rewards, and if you are okay at computer multiplayer, you will probably be #1 in a DM server. Most people will be using android or facebook, meaning that they will most likely suck. I'm not very good in other multiplayer games on PC/Mac, yet I almost always come out on top.

Shadowgun: Deadzone Free on the Mac App Store Right Now!

I should have read this thread before I cmd + q the game to quit, now I can't seem to get the game to run again, I keep getting the same error message to reopen the window and then it goes to the Apple error log and keeps looping to both error windows. I tried to uninstall and re-install but that doesn't seem to work either any suggestions.

Download App Cleaner from the App store. It'll remove the game along with any and all it's related files, configs and extra little things.

Should sort you right out.

It's good, but I often feel sorry for others playing it on the iPad, while I am fragging comfortably from behind my desktop.

Hope they fix the annoying bug where the screen turns upside down randomly, its driving me mad!

Solution

Thanks N19h7m4r3,

I downloaded AppCleaner and uninstalled the Game and other related files, but after re-installing I'm getting the same error messages and looping between the two.....darn it.....any other suggestions from anyone......

Had the same problem after re-installing it a couple of times when i though about a way to get around this problem, clear the game cache.

So install the game, then follow this guide to go to the cache library:

http://www.techerator.com/2012/10/how-to-delete-application-caches-in-mac-os-x/

Here you will search for all files with SHADOWGUN and MADFINGER on their names, just select and delete them all.

Close everything and start the game! It worked for me

Kubsha,

Thanks for the suggestion, unfortunately that didn't seem to work, I'm still getting the same errors see below for the Apple error report.

That happened to me when I deleted only the cache files with the SHADOWGUN name on them but solved when deleted the ones only with MADFINGER.

Have you deleted both kind of files? Just making sure that you didnt search for files containing both names.

That sounds really odd. I know that other Unity engine games can get the same error, but usually a clean install fixes everything.

I can only suggest that at the moment, and sending in a bug/crash report to Madfinger Games as well.
Unfortunately I can't try and reproduce this, as I currently don't have access to a Mac, and won't for a few more days.

Do let us know if you manage to get it working again.
